Nose Riding (2024)
Nose Riding marks one of the first moments in which Alex R. Plaza explored the dialogue between body, nature, and form through a symbolic lens.
Inspired by the surfing maneuver of the same name, the work reinterprets the fragile balance between control and surrender —between the geometry of human gesture and the shifting power of the ocean.
Within the composition, semi-figurative fragments such as legs and hands merge into a structure of folded planes, where the wave becomes architecture and paper becomes sea. Drawing from the observation of everyday folds, Plaza introduced in this piece a new visual architecture: matter bent and pleated as a metaphor for life’s ebb and flow.
Beyond the depiction of surfing, Nose Riding reflects on the harmony between inner state and environment. The body dissolves into the wave in a suspended instant, reminding us that true freedom arises when human will aligns with the natural rhythm of the world.
